Debug start slow

Postby sneps » October 22nd, 2013, 12:17 pm

Hello,

the starting of the debug mode is very slow (10-20s)... Eclipse does open debug mode much faster (2-3s). Could you explain me why?

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback. That's indeed slow. I usually don't even notice the start. So I've tried it on 5 years old hardware, but still it was 3 sec, so there must be something else going on.

Could you please give me know more details about your project and hardware?

The machine i am using vs2013 on has the following specs:

- win8
- core2duo e7600 3.06ghz
- 8gb ram
- 128gb ssd (samsung 840pro)

The project files are on a network drive on a server in the internal lan with a 100mbit/s connection, maybe it depends on that? but also in eclipse the project files are on that drive... additionally, during the start-time of the debug session, vs2013 becomes unusable, as the whole windows "hangs"...

the project contains Zend-Framework and TYPO3 sources, it is (containing images, ...) about 1,6GB and has about 35k of files.

do you need other specs?

Thanks for the spec. I'll try to setup something similar to test it out. Hopefully I'll be able to reproduce this.

Meantime could you just try to create a new project with one file on the same network drive to see if it's faster?

Thanks!

That could just be Visual Studio. Sometimes it can be very slow to reload all the symbols when you start debugging.

Away around this is to put the site into IIS or IIS Express and then just use AttachTo, a Visual Studio plugin, to start debugging. On larger sites I have found that this can be around 500% quicker.

You can find more information about it here: http://www.deviouscreation.com/debugging-in-visual-studio-with-iis-express-and-attachto

Our projects are on a Debian Apache Server. And they have to be there, we don't want to use IIS.

So i have to live with this debug-slowness?

Hi,

We'll try to improve the startup speed as much as it is possible.

Do you publish files automatically before debugging?

Thank you,

If you hit just Ctrl+F5 (run without debug), is it faster?

Thanks,
