Upgraded VS2012 to SP3 and VS2012 failed to start!

Postby WeedHopper » July 10th, 2013, 11:56 pm

Using System 7 SP1 64bit on ASUS Laptop

I just upgraded VS2012 to SP3 and then VS2012 would fail with fatal error when I started it; VS2012 would start okay with devenv /safemode. I only had two extensions - NuGet Package Manager and PHP Tools. I deleted the folder for PHP Tools in C:\...\...\VisualStudio\11\Extensions and then VS2012 would start finally. Also had to go through registry and delete all DEVSENSE and PHP Tool related folders/keys.

What is the correct way to do a clean uninstall of PHP Tools in a situation like this when VS2012 won't start because of PHPTools extension? Did I get all the registry values?

Is PHP Tools safe to install again with VS2012 SP3?

Thanks Neal Davis

Hi,

Thank you for giving us know. However we weren't able to reproduce this. Do you remember please, what was the error message?

The correct way of removing extensions from Visual Studio is simply to remove its installation folder (C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0\Extensions\...).

Anyway you may try to update the extension to the latest version, PHP Tools are tested against all the Visual Studio versions; in addition the latest version fixes some other minor issues (mainly when running VS under non-administrator account).

Thanks!

Hello -
VS2012 would start and open for a several seconds and then a small dialog would come up with something like application error; I don't remember exact wording. But it did put an log and event:

Event 1000, Application Error
General
Faulting application name devenv.exe, version: 11.0.60610.1, time stamp: 0x51b52140
Faulting module name: nvdxgiwrap.dll, version:8.17.12.6754, time stamp: 0x4d737266
Exception Code: 0xc0000005

Again I could start VS2012 with devenv /safemode just fine; once I uninstalled PHPTools then VS2012 would start normally. VS2012 with PHPTools was working just fine before I did the SP3 upgrade?

This seems to be more related to your NVIDIA graphics drivers. It is possible PHP Tools together with Visual Studio causes some weird case, in which the driver fails. Sadly I'm not able to replicate this behaviour.

If you would have any more details, please let me know.

Thanks!
